Well Water Testing in Ireland: What Your Results Mean

Iron, manganese, coliforms or hard water? Learn what’s commonly found in Irish well water, what results mean and how to act on them.

A well water test shows which substances are in your water and at what levels. Coliforms, E. coli, iron, manganese and hardness each point to a different issue and need a different response. Test regularly, read your results against current guidance, and get expert advice if a result is unclear.

If your home runs on a private well, the water from your tap is your responsibility. Public supplies are monitored and reported on. A private well has no such safety net, so testing is the only way to know what is in your water. Clear water can still contain bacteria or dissolved minerals.

Who is responsible for the water from my well?

As the owner of a private supply, you are generally responsible for its quality and for testing it. Guidance from Irish public bodies sets out what to test for and how often. Check the current advice from the EPA and HSE for your situation.

What does a coliform or E. coli result actually mean?

E. coli

Coliforms are a broad group of bacteria. Their presence is used as an indicator that water may have been affected by surface water or nearby sources. E. coli is a specific type of coliform. Its presence points to recent faecal contamination.

A positive result is a reason to act, not to panic. Avoid drinking untreated water until the issue is resolved, follow the advice on your report, and retest once treatment is in place. Infants, older people and anyone with a weakened immune system face the greatest risk. If anyone in your household has symptoms that persist, speak to your GP.

Why does my well water stain sinks and laundry?

Staining is usually the first visible sign of dissolved metals. Iron often leaves orange or brown marks on sinks, baths and washing. Manganese tends to leave black or dark stains. Both can also affect taste, and both can stain clothes that are washed in the water.

Is my well water hard, and does it matter?

Hardness comes mainly from calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water. Hard water leads to limescale on kettles, heating elements and shower heads. It can also make soap and detergent work less well. For most households, hardness is a daily nuisance rather than a health concern, but it can shorten the life of appliances.

How often should I test my well water?

Many households test for bacteria at least once a year. You should also test after flooding, heavy rain, a change in your water supply, or any change in taste, colour or smell. Confirm the recommended frequency with current EPA or HSE guidance, as it may vary with your circumstances.

Which treatment is right for my well?

Many well owners find that more than one issue needs attention. A treatment system designed for private well supplies may help in that case. Renewell offers the Orange Well Water Treatment System, which is designed for well water. Review the product page and compare it with your test results before you decide.
