One simple test tells you a lot about your drinking water. It costs almost nothing. It is called TDS, or total dissolved solids. A small meter reads how many dissolved particles float in your glass. The reading is given in parts per million. Once you know that number, the choice between a filter jug, reverse osmosis and bottled water stops being about marketing. It becomes about measurement.
Families stand at the sink, kettle furred with limescale, and they wonder which option really cleans their water. It is a fair question. So let us set the brochures aside and look at what the evidence says.
What TDS actually measures
Total dissolved solids is the combined weight of everything dissolved in your water. That includes good minerals like calcium and magnesium. It also includes salts, metals and other compounds.
One key point often gets lost. A TDS meter tells you how much is dissolved, but not what. It cannot tell calcium apart from lead. So TDS is a useful first signal, not a full safety report. To know exactly what is in your water, you need a lab test. Even so, that single number is the fairest way to compare the three options most families weigh up. Here is how each one performs.
The filter jug: good for taste, limited on solids
The filter jug is the most familiar choice in Irish kitchens. Brands like Brita use two materials inside the cartridge. One is activated carbon. The other is a small amount of ion exchange resin. The carbon soaks up chlorine, which is why filtered water often tastes and smells cleaner. The resin swaps out some of the calcium and magnesium that cause limescale. It also removes a few metals such as copper and zinc.
The key word is some. A jug reduces certain minerals, but it does not strip out the bulk of dissolved solids. Testing shows a jug cartridge cuts limescale by roughly 60 to 70 percent when the resin is fresh. It then fades as the resin fills up, usually within a few weeks. So a jug lowers your TDS reading a little and clearly improves taste. Yet it leaves most dissolved solids behind. Think of it as a taste tool, not a deep filter.
There is a second limit worth knowing. A jug does very little about nitrates, fluoride or microplastics. Those pass straight through. If your worry is what you cannot taste, a jug is not the tool for the job.

Reverse osmosis: the biggest reduction in dissolved solids
Reverse osmosis, or RO, works in a different way. It does not swap or soak up ions. Instead it pushes water at pressure through a membrane with pores so fine that most dissolved solids cannot pass. What comes through is clean water. What stays behind, and drains away, is the bulk of the contaminants.
This is why RO gives by far the lowest TDS of any home option. A typical system removes around 90 percent of total dissolved solids. In the same pass it cuts chlorine, heavy metals like lead and mercury, nitrates, fluoride and microplastics. The other advantage is consistency. A jug cartridge starts strong and fades within weeks, so the water you drink in week four is not the water you drank in week one. Bottled water: variable solids, and a plastic problem
Bottled water is harder to sum up because it is not one product. Some brands are rich in minerals with a high TDS. Others are purified down to a low reading. So there is no single number that describes it, and the label rarely tells you the full story.
There is, though, one finding that applies across brands. Researchers at Columbia and Rutgers universities used a new laser method to count plastic particles in bottled water. The results were striking. They found an average of about 240,000 plastic fragments per litre. Most were nanoplastics small enough to enter the body's cells. That was ten to a hundred times more than earlier studies had found. Much of the plastic seemed to come from the bottle itself. The health effects are still being studied and are not yet clear. But for a family drinking bottled water every day, the plastic load is a real and measured gap from a filtered tap.
Cost is the other factor. A household that drinks bottled water daily spends a great deal over a year, and carries every litre home. A filtered tap removes both the spend and the lifting.
Putting the three side by side
If you line them up by dissolved solids, the pattern is clear. Reverse osmosis reads lowest by a wide margin while keeping water pleasant to drink. A filter jug reads only a little below your tap and mainly improves taste. Bottled water reads all over the map and carries a plastic concern the others do not.
