How Long Can I Store Reverse Osmosis Water?

Two years

Although RO water is pure, it will not keep longer than two years. This is because the container used to store RO water releases metals or synthetic nutrients over time. Also, sometimes algae or fungi will pass through the filter. If the RO water is exposed to light, this can cause algae or fungi to grow.

Reverse osmosis (RO) water, when properly stored, can have a relatively long shelf life. The key to maintaining the quality of RO water is to store it in a clean, sealed container and protect it from contaminants and sunlight. Here are some guidelines for storing RO water:

Use Clean Containers:

Use food-grade containers that are designed for water storage. Ensure that the containers are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before filling them with RO water. Avoid containers that have previously held non-food items or chemicals.

Seal the Containers:

Seal the containers tightly to prevent air and contaminants from entering. Screw-on caps or airtight lids work well for this purpose.

Store in a Cool, Dark Place:

Keep the containers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. UV rays from sunlight can break down the quality of water over time.

Avoid Repeated Opening:

Limit the frequency of opening the containers. Every time you open the container, you expose the water to potential contaminants and introduce oxygen, which can lead to degradation.

Label and Date:

Label the containers with the date of filling to help you keep track of the water's age. RO water, if stored properly, can remain safe for an extended period, but it's a good practice to use it within a reasonable timeframe.

Regular Inspection:

Periodically inspect the stored RO water for any signs of contamination, unusual odors, or changes in taste. If you notice any issues, it's best to discard the water.

Use It Within a Year:

While RO water can theoretically be stored for a long time, it's advisable to use it within a year for the best quality and taste. Over time, even well-stored water may develop a flat or slightly off taste due to the absence of minerals.

How long RO water can be stored?

Unopened bottled water can be used for up to 1 or 2 years while once they’re opened, it can be stored for up to two weeks. RO/UV purified water can be stored up to 6 months or even longer, again depending on the storage container.

Can you get sick from drinking old water?

The water left overnight or for a long period of time in an open glass or container is home to numerous bacterias and is not safe for drinking. You never know how much dust, debris, and other small microscopic particles might have passed into that glass. Water left in a bottle for a long time is not safe to drink.

How to store RO water and keep it fresh for a month?

Keep it cool, dark, and aerated and you should be fine for a while. The UV would be worth looking into, I know they sell systems for keeping decorative outdoor ponds clean, so they have the capability of treating large amounts of water.
