What is Reverse Osmosis (RO)?
Reverse Osmosis, often abbreviated as RO, is a water purification method. Originally designed to desalinate seawater, it's now widely used for making drinking water safe. RO works by pushing untreated water through a special filter with tiny pores, removing up to 99% of contaminants like dissolved solids, chemicals, bacteria, and viruses. RO also employs antimicrobial filters to eliminate unpleasant odours, colours, and tastes, resulting in pure and clean drinking water.
Why do you need a water softener?
A water softener is your solution to the common headaches of hard water. It prolongs the lifespan of appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine, saving you from costly repairs. By allowing your appliances to operate efficiently, it also trims your energy bills. Beyond financial benefits, soft water protects your skin and hair from limescale effects, providing a more luxurious shower experience. Bid farewell to limescale deposits, as cleaning becomes effortless, leaving your fixtures sparkling.
RW5Q RO System Details
Purer than jug filtered and bottled water, the reverse osmosis (RO) purification process removes 100% of disease-causing microorganisms and 99.99% of organics, 96% lead, 70-98% heavy metals, 70% nitrates found in Irish & UK tap water.
- 7.9 L/2.1 gal of drinking water per hour
This unit comes in two parts part one the filter assembly with a size 41.4cm in height × 42.2cm in width × 13.5cm in depth.
Pure water once produced is held in a storage tank which measures: height 28cm by diameter 19 cm. The tank can be orientated either way.
NB The unit requires power and can be installed up to 2m away.
For the reverse osmosis purifier, we recommend changing the filters every year which with this model we recommend we do as part of a done-for-you service.
If you would like just the drinking water purifier serviced this is €165 or €13.75 annually.
Annual service visit – change filters and sanitise both units.
€21.50 a month or €258 annually, including replacement filters.

What do you need to know?
Although Reverse Osmosis seems like a complex system it is really a simple and straightforward water filtration process. Of all methods to purify water for domestic use, the process of using reverse osmosis is the most advanced, economical and effective.
RO is a process in which dissolved inorganic solids are removed from the water. This is accomplished by household water pressure pushing the tap water through a semipermeable membrane, the membrane has the astounding quality of attracting water molecules and repelling dissolved impurities, even those smaller than the water molecules themselves. The membrane, which is about as thick as cellophane, allows only the water to pass through, not the impurities or contaminates.
Whether you need a reverse osmosis (RO) unit in addition to a water softener depends on your water quality and specific needs. A water softener primarily deals with hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium, preventing limescale buildup and enhancing appliance longevity.
On the other hand, a reverse osmosis system takes water purification to another level by removing a broader range of impurities, including heavy metals, bacteria, and chemicals, providing exceptionally clean and safe drinking water.
However, a combination of both systems can provide a complete solution to improve the water in your home.
Reverse Osmosis successfully removes dissolved minerals and metals such as; Fluoride, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Iron, Manganese, Aluminium, Ammonium, Copper, Nickel, Zinc, Strontium, Cadmium, Silver, Mercury, Barium, Chromium, Lead, Chloride, Bicarbonate, Nitrate, Fluoride, Silicate, Phosphate, Chromate, Cyanide, Sulfate, Thiosulfate, Ferrocyanide, Bromide, Borate, Arsenic, Selenium, Trihalomethanes.
A water softener is your solution to the common headaches of hard water.
Hard water is a term used to describe water that contains excessive minerals such as calcium and magnesium, resulting in limescale buildup.
A water softener prolongs the lifespan of appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine, saving you from costly repairs. By allowing your appliances to operate efficiently, it also trims your energy bills. Beyond financial benefits, soft water pampers your skin and hair, providing a more luxurious shower experience. Bid farewell to stubborn soap scum and limescale deposits, as cleaning becomes effortless, leaving your fixtures sparkling.
A water softener operates by using a process known as ion exchange. It replaces calcium and magnesium ions (hard minerals) with sodium or potassium ions, effectively “softening” the water. As hard water flows through a tank filled with resin beads, these beads attract and trap the hard minerals, releasing softer water into your plumbing system. Over time, the resin beads become saturated and require regeneration, during which a brine solution is used to flush away the trapped minerals. This cycle keeps your water consistently soft and free from the problems associated with hard water, like limescale buildup and soap ineffectiveness.
